Toyota recalls nearly 100,000 Australian RAV4s

98,664 Toyota RAV4 mid-sized SUVs have been recalled today after an issue with the rear passenger seat belt mounting.

The recall affects the third generation of the car and those built between August 2005 and November 2012.

This issue is that if someone were to get in an accident, there’s a chance the seat belt may catch on a metal component potentially severing the belt. Toyota’s solution is to fit a resin cover, which Toyota dealers can fit for no charge. However, Toyota has warned that the enormity of the recall means that some customers will have to wait until June for the repair.

The issue was brought to Toyota’s attention after incidents in the US and Canada were reported, including one fatality. Worldwide, the recall affects 2.87 million cars.

The issue does not affect the latest generation of RAV4s.
