Slacking Off on Slack

Emails are so 2006 these days with offices around the world flocking to group instant-messaging platforms like Slack to communicate with co-workers. It allows users to send messages individually or in group chats. Surprisingly, the computer-messaging program was created by accident from the failure of a computer game.

Slack director of customer experience, Ali Rayl said Slack emerged from a failed game called Glitch, where players had to find and grow resources and build communities. It has come a long way with the startup now worth $2.8 billion and 2 million daily active users as of December 2015.

With more and more people joining Slack, the question arises of whether the chat platform is making workers more productive or just wasting time? The average user spends 10 hours per weekday logged onto the platform. A large majority are guilty of sharing secrets and jokes on Slack but are they spending too much time on it?

Productivity or procrastination… what do you think?
