Importing cars from overseas in 2018

The Australian car industry is set to flip upside down in 2018 after an announcement from Minister of Major Projects, Paul Fletcher. Not only will local car manufacturing be put to an end but also consumers will now be able to import a car or motorbike from overseas.

Some conditions apply as the vehicle must not be more than 12 months old, less than 500 km on the odometer and come from a country with comparable standards (aka Japan and UK until more are determined).

If you’re a car enthusiast you’ll be cheering at the news that classics and collectibles that are at least 25 years old will be easier to import. The government will also remove the $12,000 special duty on imported used vehicles, which was first introduced in 1995. Fletcher said, “By removing this duty, we will provide more options for Australian consumers.”
