Robots are quickly gaining a lot of intelligence, just last month Google created AI that could beat a human in the ancient game of Go. However, German car company, Mercedes are favouring people on their assembly line rather than robots.
According to Bloomberg, the new S-Class boasts a lot of intricate details that robots cannot cope with, so it’s out with the new and in with the old so to say.
“Robots can’t deal with the degree of individualization and the many variants that we have today,” Mercedes’ head of production Markus Schaefer told Bloomberg. “We’re saving money and safeguarding our future by employing more people.”
This change could also have a lot to do with the current love of nostalgia and hand made products. As scientists work on driverless cars, there is a significant group of people who desire a classic, luxurious car that they know was lovingly made with human hands. It can be seen with the resurgence of vinyl, film and craft beer.
So now German engineering won’t just mean good robots, but German engineers, crafting your precious driving machine.
