When researcher Sanmay Ved saw “Google.com” available for purchase on Google Domains in October he purchased it for a total of $US12. For a grand total of 1 minute he owned “google.com” until Google quickly realised and cancelled the purchase.
They later gave him an undisclosed reward, which he only described as “very Googley” in a LinkedIn post. In Google’s recent 2015 Year in Review blog post, that reward was revealed to be $6,006.13, which is “Google” spelled with numbers.
Ved said it was never about the money and chose to donate his reward to an Indian foundation that focuses on bringing education to the slums. After hearing that he was donating it to charity, Google offered to double the amount.
