Ever since Snapchat became one of the big players in the social media world, Facebook has done it’s best to stay ahead of their highly successful competitor. Mark Zuckerberg actually really wanted to buy Snapchat (for $1 billion) but being turned down meant they would need to do whatever it takes to compete.
Facebook recently bought Masquerade (MSQRD), one of the most popular apps on the app store right now. The app lets you overlay animated filters on one’s face (sounds familiar) from Leonardo DiCaprio to a very creepy monkey. The startup announced in a blog post, “Now, we’re excited to join forces with Facebook and bring the technology to even more people. Within Facebook, we’re going to be able to reach people at a scale like never before.”

This isn’t the first time Facebook has tried to mimic Snapchat features including the time back in 2013 when they launched the app, Poke which allowed users to send self-destructing photos and videos. Then there was Slingshot in 2014, which has the same concept as Snapchat but users needed to first “sling” a picture back in order to open an incoming one.
The battle is on between these two social media networks, who will make the next move?
