In the early hours of Wednesday morning, Republican Donald Trump was officially announced as the 45th president of the United States. The news itself caused outraged amongst US voters as over 500 protestors took to the street in and around the University of California, shouting anti-Trump expletives along with the chant ‘not my president’. These actions were in direct response to the behaviours and claims associated with Trump during his campaign, which included sexual harassment, racism and bigotry, plus a recent endorsement by the Ku Klux Klan.
As the presidency was established by the number of electoral votes, both Trump and Clinton were required to reach 270, with Trump attaining victory at 276 and Clinton at 218. Voters were confused by these results as it was reported that interviews with exiting pollsters found that 60% rated Trump as unqualified for the White House.
Then, at approximately 2:39 am, Trump took to the stage to music from Air Force One, surrounded by friends and family.
“I just received a call from Secretary Clinton. She congratulated us on our victory and I congratulated her and her family on a very very hard fought campaign,” Trump began before adding onto his acceptance speech.
“We must reclaim our country’s destiny, and dream big, and bold and daring. I want to tell the world community that while we will always put America’s interests first, we will deal fairly with everyone. We will get along with all other nations willing to get along with us. America will no longer settle for anything less than the best.”
During this period of time, Clinton did not appear in public, however, chairman, John Podesta made an appearance at Clinton’s would-be celebratory place, the Manhattan’s Javits convention centre, before encouraging voters to return to their homes.
While Trump has promised the nation to rebuild its infrastructure by creating millions of new jobs along with an improved level of care for veterans, it is now a matter of time to see whether Trump will be able to make his promises a reality.
