‘No member, male or female will be exempt from participating fully in the operation of the parliament while caring for a baby’ according to new rules for a family-friendly parliament.
The amendment to the law, that passed earlier this week, saw a much-needed change to The Australian Governments archaic rules regarding breastfeeding.
Under previous parliamentary rules children were banned in the chamber and breastfeeding mothers, given a proxy. Controversy plagued the parliament, with female members ejected from the lower house and asked to consider expressing milk in order to avoid missing parliamentary duties in recent years.
This simple, but significant move has made the House of Representatives the most family-oriented chamber in Australian politics, making life notably more tolerant of women in Government.
