Cake culture could be slowly killing employees

We all love our chocolate biscuits, donuts and sweet offerings at work. Especially as incentives when you’re doing a smashing job in the office. But studies have shown that it’s fuelling the obesity epidemic and ruining people’s teeth. It’s no doubt why, as people are sedentary sitting at their desks all day consuming high calorie items with too much sugar than the recommended dose.

Over the past forty years, the rate of obesity has increased 2.6-fold and the number of obese people worldwide has blown out from 105 million in 1975 to 641 million in 2014. A staggering 13 percent of the global population is now obese.

So how can workplaces implement a better healthy eating scheme? For one thing, quantity should always be considered. Don’t snack constantly outside of lunch hours.

The culture of offering a piece of cake or biscuit with a coffee in meetings should be absolved. Instead turn to low calorie substitutes including almonds, fresh fruit and occasionally cheese and crackers.

Overeating will expand your stomach and you’ll begin to crave that artificial sugar fix around a similar time everyday. There is such a thing as an addiction to sugar and the withdrawal effects like having a headache will decrease your productivity at work.

Instead, stick to foods that are rich in nutrients and vitamins to give you that extra kick throughout your work day. Fruits and vegetables are a great way to improve your eyesight, energise your brain and overall keep your day on track. If you’re not sure where to start, avocados, carrots, strawberries and almonds are some easy snacks to increase your productivity.
