Amazon Kindle Unlimited, which has been dubbed “Netflix for books” has finally arrived in Australia.
The service, which launched in the USA more than two years ago, provides access to over one million titles that are available on the Kindle e-reader, Fire Tablet and the Kindle app for iOS or Android.
Access costs $13.99 per month, which is more than most movie, television and music streaming services. However, Amazon said that unlike services such as Spotify and Netflix, Kindle Unlimited is “aimed at serious readers.”
The service provides access to a number of popular books, including the Harry Potter series, the Man Booker prize winning title The Sellout, The Dressmaker and other books from Australian authors, such as Chrissie Swan, Colleen McCullough and David Malouf.
David Naggar, Amazon Kindle vice-president, said Amazon was “delighted” to launch this service in Australia due to its success in the United States. Additionally, it has encouraged more people to read books inside and outside of Amazon.
“For less than the cost of a best-selling paperback, readers now have unlimited access to over one million titles, allowing them to discover new authors and books, including top sellers and tens of thousands of inspiring stories from local authors,” Mr Naggar said.
Users also have the option to trial the Amazon Kindle Unlimited free for the first 30 days, but then they will be charged monthly.
JB-Hi-Fi is carrying the entire line of e-readers, which will enable people to test the service before committing.
