A security contractor shot dead at the Australian Embassy in Baghdad

Foreign minister Julie Bishop confirmed this morning that an Australian security contractor has been shot dead at the Australian Embassy in Baghdad. She said, “The Government extends its condolences to the family of the Australian man over this tragic incident.”

The circumstances surrounding his death are being investigated and The Australian Government will not provide any more information at this time during the investigation and out of respect for the man’s family. Sources in Iraq say that the man was a former Australian special forces soldier providing security services to the Australian Embassy working for the Unity Resources Group.

Ms Bishop assured the shooting would be “thoroughly investigated” and said, “I am advised the high level of security is being maintained at the embassy.”

The embassy is located in the high-security International Zone, or Green Zone, in the city.
