Following last years diesel emission scandal, Volkswagen Group could be facing a $1.56AU billion fine over the Diesel Gates crisis. The lawsuit is being dealt with by the legal team from VW and the Department of Justice in the United States.
The European producer has violated the Clean Air Act, alleging that the 4.0 cylinder Volkswagen and Audi from 2009-15 have software that do not take into account the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA).
Prosecutors may seek a guilty plea or set up a deferred prosecution agreement where charges will be dismissed if they adhere to the terms and conditions set by the environmental statute. However this lawsuit will take a long time to settle and the company may be losing millions because of the settlement and criminal charges faced against them.
The German make is looking to repair more than 400,000 diesel cars with illegal emission control software. The new 1.2 and 2.0 litre have not been altered to the new standards that have been set by the environmental statutes.
“Using a defeat device in cars to evade clean air standards is illegal and a threat to public health,” said Cynthia Giles an Assistant Administrator for the Office of Enforcement and Compliance Assurance.

- Jetta (MY 2009 – 2015)
- Jetta Sportwagen (MY 2009-2015)
- Beetle (MY 2012 – 2015)
- Beetle Convertible (MY 2012-2015)
- Audi A3 (MY 2010 – 2015)
- Golf (MY 2010 – 2015)
- Golf Sportwagen (MY 2015)
- Passat (MY 2012-2015)
