Q&A Recap: A Melbourne dad, the tax threshold and a $6000 toaster

Melbourne truck driver and father of two, Duncan Storrar stole the show on Monday night’s episode of Q&A on ABC. The panel consisted of assistant treasurer Kelly O’Dwyer, the Green’s Adam Bandt, Labor’s Andrew Leigh, Australian Industry Group CEO Innes Willox, and Australian Council of Social Services boss Cassandra Goldie.

Storrar asked, “I’ve got a disability and a low education, that means I’ve spent my whole life working for minimum wage. You’re gonna lift the tax-free threshold for rich people,” he said. “If you lift my tax-free threshold, that changes my life. That means that I get to say to my little girls, ‘Daddy’s not broke this weekend, we can go to the pictures’. Rich people don’t even notice their tax-free threshold lift. Why don’t I get it? Why do they get it?”

Rather than showing sympathy, O’Dwyer not only attempted to dodge the question but then said, “It’s not correct to say we have provided a tax cut to the top taxpayers.” She then continued to explain the benefits of a $6000 toaster because toast is currently a weekend bottleneck and will lead to more jobs in a cafe. Twitter was quick to name it the “Toorak Toaster”.

A GoFundMe page created to raise $6000 for Storrar to buy his own toaster has gone viral with around 800 people donating over $20,000. The campaign description included:

Hey – Duncan seems like a good bloke and every little bit of cash goes a long way.

We reckon he deserves a bit of a helping hand so we’ve decided to buy him a new toaster.

6 grand oughtta cover it. And if he has a little bit left over, maybe he can take his kids to the movies or something.

Would you like to kick in a few dollars?

One kind donator Stu said, “The Liberal government doesn’t care about people like you. Most Australians do however. Have a great weekend at the movies with your kids Duncan.”
