Scientific Breakthrough Observes Gravitational Waves

If you were bamboozled by last week’s ‘Nobel Prize worthy’ scientific breakthrough, you were not alone.

In essence; the discovery confirms a major prediction of Albert Einstein’s 1915 general theory of relativity and opens an unprecedented new window onto the cosmos. According to LIGO, the breakthrough ‘observes ripples in the fabric of spacetime called gravitational waves, which arrive at the earth from a cataclysmic event in the distant universe’.

Clear as mud?

Check out this clip from LIGO (the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory) for a better preliminary understanding.
