The President of the United States held his final White House Correspondent’s Dinner in Washington D.C. over the weekend, and we’re taking the time to honour the way he’s presented himself as an incredible leader over the past eight years of his Presidency.
1. Accessibility
An undeniable asset of Obama’s presidency has been his ability and willingness to interact with the American public. A leader needs to be more than just a symbolic figurehead, it’s important to form real connections and relationships, and Obama excelled at this. There’s no better example of this friendliness and understanding of the US public than his White House Correspondent’s Dinners, where he openly makes jokes and becomes the most personable President the US has perhaps ever seen.
2. Confidence
The POTUS oozes confidence. From the way he walks to his command of his voice, even in photos you can sense the confidence that seems to emanate from Obama. This is ideal in any leadership position, as you need the people around you to trust what you’re saying. It’s also important to inspire confidence in others by keeping the mood positive and the outlook optimistic.
3. Productivity
Something Obama can say for his Presidency is that he got things done, and really made a change. Being a good, confident speaker and connecting with an audience will only get you so far, you have to stick to your word and actually go through with what you say you’re going to do. Keep productivity up and always as high as possible by being productive yourself, setting a good example is key.
4. Decisiveness
While getting advice from others is always a good idea, you need to be willing to make the hard decisions in any situation. You are the leader, and what you say will go, so you need to be mindful of all the perspectives before making a decision, but don’t linger too long or people will start to worry you can’t make your mind up.
5. Charisma
Going on with the accessibility ideal, it’s important that when you speak and interact with others you show how charismatic and engaging you can be. If people start getting bored, they’ll zone out, and once they zone out you’ve lost them. Practice having conversations, and keep people interested. Asking them questions and getting to know them individually will always help in making people like you that much more.
