3 Stunning Sustainable Holiday Homes

It’s reached that time of year where you’re aching for a holiday and dream of hiking, swimming or just sleeping in an idyllic home anywhere but here. So we’ve selected the three most seductive sustainable holiday homes to tempt you into taking an eco-friendly holiday right now. Whether you’re looking for your next eco-friendly holiday home, or looking to ditch your job and go and live off the grid in the wilderness, you’ll be enchanted by these three homes. They each combine high technology with environmental considerations, clever design and, importantly, comfort.

P.A.T.H. are a luxurious line of ecofriendly homes called Prefabricated Accessible Technological Homes. These gorgeous homes are the product of a collaboration between celebrated French designer and architect Philippe Starck and the Slovenian firm Riko. They are available in a range of sizes and shapes and can be entirely customised, from the outer shell to the sustainable technology. Options for technology include solar and wind power (both roof based), as well as rainwater collection and filtration. The houses are also beautiful and comfortable, with plenty of space to relax and recuperate for your well-deserved break from work (or to tempt you into retirement). You can pick up a plot of land and have a P.A.T.H. down on it quite quickly, or find one to rent.

Fall House

This is the ideal sustainable holiday home. It’s beautiful, it’s breezy and it’s by the sea. Settled on the California coastline of Big Sur, this is a house that both reflects and respects the environment it’s in. It has a copper facade that is guaranteed to weather and turn green over time, as it comes into contact with the sea air. The copper is significant both for its durability and its look, as it blends in. Energy efficient “Low-E” windows were installed in the house, as was underfloor radiant hydronic heating and formaldehyde-free denim – a non-harmful insulation material. Fall House’s largely open design encourages stack ventilation, but this process is enhanced thanks to automatically opening windows which draw in cool air from the lower levels of the home. The opening windows work in tandem with an exhaust transfer grille toward the top of the home which expels the hot air that’s drawn up.

Ecocapsule

While not as beautiful (or spacious) as the other two sustainable homes, the Ecocapsule’s seduction lies in it’s mobility. This compact little home can be set down anywhere and will ensure your comfort in the most uncomfortable settings. It’s designed by a Slovakian team who designed the pod to be self-sustaining and luxurious. There are both wind turbines and solar panels to generate energy and batteries to store excess energy. There are also reservoirs to collect rainwater and morning dew before a system of filters kills 99.99% of the bacteria. This would be incredibly handy if you’re the kind of person that wants a remote outdoors holiday, like hiking in the desert, but also enjoys clean fresh-water. The full sustainable benefits are outlined in the video below. One of the most exciting features is that the Ecocapsule can be hitched up to the back of a car and towed along like a caravan if the need for a holiday strikes you suddenly (like it is right now). It’s comfortable, mobile, tiny and self-sufficient. What more could you ask for in a holiday home?
